Dear Dr. Smith

I would like to ask you a question: In my Country, and everywhere I suppose, youths go to cinema. Is it wrong? My parents are harassing me to stop going. What does the Bible teach about that? I thank you already for your help.

God bless you.

Dear xxxxxx;

Most Seventh-day Adventist Christians do not go to the Cinema. Over the years the Church has taught that that's one of the places members should avoid. There are no direct scriptural grounds for this in that Cinemas did not exist in Bible times. However, later on in history when the gladiators use to fight in the Roman coliseum, Christians refused to attend those gatherings. The Bible says that we are to shun the very appearance of evil   (1 Thes 5: 22), and upon that basis cinema going should be avoided for the following reasons:

1.  Most of the movies are not appropriate for Christians. (True, you can watch it even from your bed room with the advent of cable) but that does not make it right still.

2. The audience atmosphere is not conducive to Christian conduct

3. Sometimes young people are in the wrong crowd, the friends that are going to the cinema, are friends that will do other non-Christian things. Eventually this could weaken ones' taste for spiritual things or fall prey to unlawful behavior.

4. The moves are so sexually explicit, that at times they inflamed the passion and can cause one to violate moral and spiritual principles.

I am aware of the fact that many Adventist young people go to the movies and see it as no big deal. They will even refute all of my arguments with arguments of their own. However the Spirit of Prophecy states clearly;

"True Christian will not desire to enter any place of amusement or engaged in any diversion upon which he cannot ask the blessing of God. He will not be found at the theater." AH 515.4

"The blessing of God would not be invoked upon the hour spent at the theater or in the dance. No Christian should wish to meet death in such a place." AH 516.1

" Among the most dangerous resorts for pleasure is the theater. Instead of being a school for morality and virtue, as is so often claimed, it is the very hotbed of immorality. AH 516.2

God Bless,

Dr. Smith
