Dear Dr. Smith
Dear Dr. Smith,
Is it a sin to masturbate?
For the Child of God, sexual pleasuring by self-stimulation in not recommended. Many people develop chronic guilt, which may be as destructive as the act of masturbation itself. Masturbation may lead to other pseudo-sex acts, such as pornography.
Pornography is disrespect of personhood and the use of others for personal pleasure with no regard for their individuality. Pornography is sex without relationship as is masturbation. Masturbation, therefore, is mechanical, non-loving, self-pleasuring sexual activity.
EG White states, “some who make high profession do not understand the sin of self-abuse and its sure results. Long-established habit has blinded their understanding. They do not realize the exceeding sinfulness of this degrading sin, which is enervating the system and destroying their brain nerve power.” CCh 109.5
Some possible side effects of masturbation are:
• It can lead to pre-mature ejaculation in marriage
• It can lead to lower sperm count
• You can become addicted
• Self-stimulation leads to self-satisfaction: possible problems in marriage
• It can affect self-esteem
• Affects spirituality
While the Bible does not address the issue of masturbation, the Apostle Paul clearly states in 1 Cor 10:31, “whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.”
Taking all these factors into consideration, the answer to your question is, ‘Yes’, masturbation is a sin.
I hope this has been helpful to your and I pray God that if you have this weakness, you will go to Him for power to over come. The first step is to stop it and then pray for strength to keep abstaining.
