Dear Dr. Smith
Dear Dr. Smith,
Please pray for me I need deliverance over pornography. The urge is so strong but by God's grace it is possible. Also I'm having an affair with another girl hence cheating my first girlfriend and I need God's help in removing me from this mess which I now don't want.
Dear Frustrated Person,
Thanks for reaching out to me. There is no question that I will be praying for you and it’s great that you are asking for prayer, however, you need to do more than just asking for prayer. You need to pray, work and resist.
Pray: Every time you feel this strong urge, bow your head in prayer and ask God to take it away. If you are in front of the computer or TV, turn it off. Prayer does change things but all prayer and no work make you remain a victim.
Work: There is something that is feeding your pornographic appetite. The internet, movies, magazines, DVDs, etc. You must now get to work and remove them. If you cannot control your use of the Internet or any other devise that you get your porn hype from, then get rid of it.
You must also work on you mind, this is the hardest, because your mind is already so corrupted with the visual graphics you have been feeding on, that it is hard to delete them. However, nothing is impossible, start reading your bible more frequently, read other wholesome books, get out of the house and get some exercise, start writing a poem, a song or something to occupy your mind. Maybe you should take up art, biking, hiking, fishing, etc. Displacement must take place. You must displace the pornography with something better. Remember the devil finds work for idle hands, don't allow your mind to stay idle.
Resist: The fact that you start doing some of my suggestions or others of your own, does not negate the fact that the temptation to porn will not come back. As a matter of fact the urge to do it will come back at you stronger than before. However, your victory lies in resisting. The bible says, resist the devil and he will flee from you (James 4:7). Make every conscious effort not to return to your old habit. This is when prayer works best, when you have a desire not to sin and you strive to fulfill it.
Your second problem is compounded by your first. You will not be able to avoid the pitfalls of the second until you get rid of the first. Remember, whatsoever you do, do all to the honor and glory of God. Keep praying, keep working and keep resisting. I will help you in your prayer.
